Sky view Bus Shelter in the Capital

Kumarapuram Bus Stop Shelter – Open Roof
  1. Have you seen the roofless bus shelter at Kumarapuram junction?
  2. Did you have any questions, like, Who maintains it? Why there are no  repairs?
  3. Did you think of taking it forward?

From a sleepy junction, now Kumarapuram junction is a bustling locality with traffic, people and shops.

It became popular with Maldivians as they are many hospitals in close vicinity. Besides, Technopark staff pass through Kumarapuram junction to reach bypass and then to Technopark. People going to KIMS  hospital pass through this junction to reach this hospital.

Despite the importance of Kumarapuram, the bus shelter is in a bad state. If the govt can’t do it, why can’t the private offices or even people of this locality.

I feel, hospital like Lords, or KIMS, or even hugely successful diagnostic centre like Devi Scans, or hotels like  Biverah, or Adrek, or any doctor or doctors with good practice, or NRI’s can take the task of rebuilding this bus shelter.

Even a group of techies from Technopark or from a near by MBA institute can take it forward as a project. Plan, get sponsor, and execute it.

What’s it for you/or them?

  • When you maintain this stop, people will notice  you
  • Even a small board saying ( Maintained by ….) will  give you brand value
  • People will thank you for it
  • Doing voluntary work is good for your resume.

Create one more Job  – At important bus stops
While writing this, I got this epiphany. Why not employ a person at the bus stop to answer many questions. This person will be like a ‘Help Post’. The person will act as a guide, help or try to give best answers‘. May I Help You!

Well, people waiting or reaching this bus stop will have questions like:

  • When is the next bus to Technopark?
  • Did this particular bus leave?
  • Which is the best hotel to have food here?
  • Will I get homemade food in this locality?
  • Is there any job(s) available in this neighbourhood?
  • Which lodge do you recommend?
  • Which scanning centre offers the best rates?
  • Who is the best doctor for …..?
  • Any free lodging facility for cancer patients?
  • Where is the closest photocopy, Internet centre?
  • I’m hungry… Where can I get free food?
  • Where can I pledge my jewels?
  • How to get a rented house in this locality?
  • Where can I get North Indian food?
  • How much does it cost me to take auto from here to Eastfort?
  • Is there a English Medium school in this locality?
Again, the question remains. What’s in for me? How can I afford to pay for this help desk guy? The sponsor gets the freedom to showcase this as a CSR activity. And, they can write about on the blog, or on their newsletter. You are creating one more job and helping solve many questions people have.I hope you get the message!

Food Biz Opportunity at Banaswadi Railway Station

Banaswadi Railway Station – Parking Lot Frenzy

It’s a everyday scene at Banaswadi Railway station. Hoards of hungry Mallus with all the knickknacks from Kerala land at Banaswadi railway station. It all started from the time Garib Rath from Kochu Veli started this route – and the sleepy Banaswadi railway station changed its name and fame.

When the train arrives in Banaswadi, it’s a mad scramble of people to reach home, offices, etc. So, what’s the big business idea at Banaswadi Railway station.

We’re missing a food joint – a place which serves, home-quality Kerala breakfast.

If own any of the houses in front of the railway station, then you can think of selling hot Iddiappam, Appam, Puttu, Idli, Dosa, Sandwich, etc. As a side dish, you can make egg masala curry, or sambar, chutney, or if can make beef, then even more better. Think about it!

People are hungry, and they don’t have time to go home and prepare breakfast. You’ll do a good service, and can earn a good profit too.

What do you think? Have you thought of such food business idea in places where you’ve visited? Have you thought of a food joint at a place where tourists and visitors arrive in big number?

If you know of any place which is ideal for restaurant business, then share in the comments box or tell it to our friends and colleagues. Someone might take it forward!

Be Wary of Lonely Roads in Domlur

Be wary of this Lonely Stretch – Domlur

Recently my partner was waiting to get an auto to visit a shop at Cambridge Layout. It was dark, around 8:00 in the evening. After waiting for a long time, she started walking towards Cambridge Layout. Just then a lady come in a scooter, stopped and offered her a lift. She insisted that it’s not safe to walk in this road at this time. She claims that there have been many incidents of chain snatching, etc in this road. .

With two minds she hopped on the scooter. This young lady then dropped at the shop, and even offered to wait till she finished her job. My partner was bowled over by this stranger’s generosity. Finally, she convinced her to leave as it will take more time.

While, such kind of random acts of  kindness is scare in busy cities like in Bangalore, it’s sometimes assures us that it’s still alive.

Lonely And Dim Lit Roads in Domlur
Just try an avoid using lonely strech of road, where there are no houses or shops, especially at night. It’s the road from Domlur ISRO colony till DCA quarters at Cambirdge Layout (near to the old Polo Bar).

Have a Safe Day!

Small Business Mentoring India

Off late, I’ve become a big fan of small businesses. Along, the way I started hating cubicle life.  Probably, I’m a misfit in the factory culture in any typical corporate world.

As a big supporter of small business, I love small business marketing and love to see how people with little leverage making an attempt to create something new.

Latest Grub Joint in Domlur
Recently, I noticed a small restaurant which has opened near Domlur. It’s called “The Grub Hub”. After seeing it for few days, I decided to give it a try their menu. The menu is a happy one – pork, beef and chicken items. The lady and the man who runs this shop appears to have done their homework – tasty food, small and clear space.

Small Business – Motivation from Government.

As we know, government in all states have departments and a bunch of staff to administer policies and initiates to support small business. From licences to financial support to quality checks, they are in charge of rolling out change.

But, as we know for sure, most policies and activities are restricted in some manual, tall promises. Only, a trickle reaches the small business owner. I’ve been thinking of ways they can step out and do some real work. What could it be?

My suggestions to small business or Industries department of state government:

1) Re-wamp existing website, which have unclear navigation, old and boring content. Get it done by a reputed webdesign company. The website should be responsive, should have a newsletter subscription space.

2) Create Facebook page for all the small business initiatives.

3) Politicians and bureaucrats should be allotted specific localities. They should visit the shops in various localities and offer help and support. At least, go and pat the back of a small business owner for contributing to the tax.

4) Offer, some gift for the highest tax payer in the locality.

Well, all these are just a pipe dream. I don’t thing the way our system works in India, our politicians and bureaucrats will do such proactive efforts. Well, If I was a politician, then I would have done it . Why because, it will indirectly make me popular, help me do my job, will help me understand the problems faced by the people, etc. In other words, it’s good for the community, and for the individual.

Common Space to Donate

I though of this post after this episode – the helper who comes to our house in Trivandrum, placed two jackfruits outside our gate. We didn’t want the jackfruit, so wanted to dispose it. And he thought it would be good idea to keep it outside by the road side so that some one might pick it.

Well, there are many things we dispose or would like to donate. But, most often we don’t have an immediate solution. Just imagine that in each town, locality, or panchayat there a space to keep donate stuff, old stuffs, so that it would reach the needy.

Things you can give for free in a place like Kerala, could be- coconuts, seasonal crops, jackfruits, clothes, old furniture, books, etc.

But, someone has to coordinate.

If you have time and good intention, then you can initiate it. Probably, it could be easier if you assemble likeminded people from your school, college or locality. Give the project a name and there you go.

It’s ideal if you can start a Facebook community page. Provide details, like phone number, etc. Besides, such non-profit activity will be good for your resume. You can boldly talk to interviewers on how you failed or succeed in your effort and the lessons learned. Also, how digital marketing helped you to connect.

If it works, it’s chance to spreads happiness, positive feeling, and goodness. And, only you can do it!

Good, Bad, Ugly Trends in Trivandrum

Wind Of Change – In Trivandrum

It’s almost a decade back that I landed in Bangalore. My mission – seek a new life, new career, and experience new thrills. During the initial days in B’lore, I got exposed and saw an all new lifestyle, food habits and social lifestyle.

A a fellow who lived most of my life in Trivandrum, it was an eyeopener in many respects. I vividly remember a lady at Koshy’s restaurant in a blue sari having a coffee and smoking  a cigarette. A lady smoking cigarette! A shocker for me! And, she was one hot milf.

Next, I found burqa clad women and I had many questions about it. I’ve not seen such conservative dressing in Trivandrum. And, one more thing, I was surprised to know that beef is a taboo and many Kerala mess which serve beef don’t include it in the menu.

Well, those were my initial experiences in B’lore. And now, when I look at the life in Trivandrum, I’m seeing far too many changes. Wonder, if it’s for the good, or bad. Only time can tell!

Trivandrum – Wind of Change

When I was not a part of Trivandrum, what did this city change? Personally for me, my social connection in this city has shrinked. I haven’t added any new friends and many friends have left its shores to better prospects. And for me, I’ve become older, with more grey portions.

Apart from it, here are few things that I feel has changed.

#1 It appears that people are more pious or pretending to be god fearing. For instance, every small le temple is filled with devotees. In many by-roads, there are arches being built by temple  authorities. And, many temples has started Pongala. Why is this sudden rush of faith? Are people turning more kinder, more connected, helpful?

#2 As more Kerala Muslim women adopts burqa, more exclusive burqa shops are opening in the capital. Again, I’m surprised by the change. I still remember the way Muslim women in Calicut used to dress. Young  girls with a scarf and older ladies with a head dress – a white cloth with a some border over their  head. It was very unique to our culture. Sadly, it’s gone with the change.

# 3 Mega chuches are being built. For instance, the old tiled Vettucaud Church  made with lime, bricks, and wood is razed. I still remember the wooden beams, the confession chamber, and the wooden doors. There was something good about the old Vettucaud church. Sadly, it’s demolished to make for a concrete, mega structure. Why didn’t they leave the old building in tact and built a new one? Why raze that iconic church?

# Traffic islands are well maintained with grass and plans. I love this change and I wonder who had made this happen. The biggest transformation was the makeover of one derelict public park in Eastfort. Now, it’s a well maintained public space. Again, special thanks to the city planners and the individuals behind it.

# Fish stalls –  Earlier, only Connmera fish market was the mecca of fish buyers and sellers. I used to visit this place during evenings and even late at night to buy fish. The place was badly maintained, and customers had little choice about getting their fish cleaned. Now, there are many small fish stalls, like the Fish Day, near Kumarapuram. Though bit pricy, they sell fresh fish. Best part, they clean the fish.

# Sorry state of liquor shops in Trivandrum. This is a big NO for me and for the way they treat liquor buyers. The limited number of outlets, the dirty shops, the line in front of the shops, and more. Aren’t the big bosses seeing the liquor marts in Bangalore? Well, we are still living in a monopoly era. All the goddamn rules and rules. I hate it all.

# Eastfort bus stand and surrounding is still dirty, unkept. It’s like Kalyashepalayam in Bangalore. When it rains in Eastfort, then it’s flood of sludge, drain water, and every element you can expect.

# Far too many gold mortage shops in each junction, each locality. Is this a good news? Or does this tel of our debt?

# Mangoozes are over populating. Was there any ecological disturbance, due to which it started massive reproduction. Recently, I saw a mother mongooze and children crossing from one side of the road to another.

Off-topic – Gripe About this
# Cafeteria and Milma Parlour in Museum – If there are few things that won’t change, then these two are the are the perfect examples of how slow system works. How profits are ignored, how customer satisfaction and choice is ignored.

I had written earlier about the KTDC cafeteria inside Napier Museum. What agitates me is their monopoly, and the opportunity they are wasting each single day. Long back I spoke to the man working in the Milma counter here inside Museum. He said, for getting a chair replaced, he need sanction from the head office. Typical bureaucratic hand. Why can’t the big bosses see the opportunity here? Should I write a mail to them? Will it work? Or will you send one on my behalf?

My friend was telling me on how packed this Milma stall inside Napier Museum is on a weekend. People crowd to get a ice cream or a bottle of milk product. Simple question – why can’t they add 1 or 2 person to manage the stall on a weekend. Pay an extra 500 bucks to each person and earn an extra 10K for the organization.

Crazy and innovative small business ideas in Calcutta

I have visited Calcutta twice. In my recent visit ( November 2014), I stayed at Emirates Hotel, which is located close to Park Street. And in the short visit in Calcutta, I didn’t have to go far to see the grim economic realities of this erstwhile cosmopolitan city.

Oh Calcutta!
What happened to this arty city? Where are the poets, writers, industrialists, economists and liberal thinkers?

From what I learnt from few colleagues – there’s a serious brain drain in Calcutta Some thing like in Kerala. Unlike in Kerala, where folks went to Middle East, Bongs took less risk. They settled in Indian cities like B’lore or Delhi, B’bay, etc

Bringing Back The Glory Days

Most people say bongs in Calcutta are laid back. And they are not motivated to excel, achieve or succeed professionally in life. It may be true, but it can’t also be true!

I want to see a new Calcutta. Yes, seriously.

So, how can we reverse the fortune? What can people do to inspire the future generation to make “City of Joy” their home? How can we slowly rebuilt Calcutta to the old glory

So, here goes my baggage of small business ideas for Calcutta – Something similar to what I’ve written for Kerala, and similar cities like Bangalore.

Anyways, something are very peculiar to Calcutta, and here are few of my crazy business idea plans.

1) Start Bungee Jumping from Howrah Bridge

It’s crazy but all standards. But, it could be something the government can initiate and generate some money to its coffers. Here’s my plan. Every Saturday, probably from 6 Am to 10 Am, they can start bungee jumping. For a start, get experts from New Zealand. Just imagine, people getting adrenalin rush from Howrah bridge. Funny! For instant publicity, get a politician or a cricket star to inaugurate it with a plunge from Howrah bridge!

2) Teach Bengali Cuisine

It’s known for a fact many foreigners visit Calcutta for various reasons. Some to do service in Missionaries of Charity, or some off beat travelers seeking to explore the Calcutta.

If you have the skill, passion for cooking, and have a pace in your house, then get it going. If you need inspiration, you can have a look at Menna’s Indian Cooking Classes in Bangalore Facebook Page. With proper online promotion, placement, you can easily attract people to start enquiries about your class. Give it a try if you’ve the love and passion of sharing Bengali Cuisine to interested folks.

3) Open a Calcutta Themed Memorabilia Store

This idea goes to all cities in India. Start an exclusive store selling high-quality collectibles and memorabilia.  Some ideas could be cushion covers, model of Howrah Bridge, Vintage picture of Calcutta, Coasters with the insignia of Calcutta, quality jute products just likes the one’s sold at Jute Cottage, in Bangalore.

4) Story Telling and walking Tours

I bet there are few fantastic walking tours in Calcutta. Well, there’s space for more players, such as individuals with an indepth knowledge of the history of Calcutta. If you are a person with a passion for story telling, then by all means share to people like me – I’m all ears. We can meet at Calcutta Coffee House, or just take me for a stroll around the landmark building and narrate an interesting past of this glorious city. Can you. If you need help to promote your biz online, then I can help you with this. So, what are you waiting for!

5) Open Spas ( Foot Spa and Body Spa_

This is my suggestion to any city, any village or town. If you’ve an interest towards massage, or relaxation therapy ( aroma), then you should try opening a spa in Calcutta. Best part of this business – It’s a service, so, require minimal investment. Running cost is less, no big expenses.

Don’t Cry for me Kerala

Don’t judge the post by the headline. I couldn’t think of a better one at this point of time. As for this post, I had been thinking of penning it down for quite sometime. And, again the same feeling resurfaced when I went to a courier company.

All I wanted was to send few cardboard boxes from Bangalore to Trivandrum. I went to two courier service and both them refused to send a consignment to Kerala. One fella sent that the check post problem. Another didn’t give any reason. Why is it becoming increasingly difficult to do business in Kerala? Who makes these policies and who is it benefiting?

Apart from sending courier to Kerala, even ecommerce sites are refusing to send things to Kerala. Again some tax problem? Why are they finicky about it? Why don’t the Government make things easier…maybe give some space for growth? Well, they might loose a bit on tax, but it will facilitate trade to flourish.

Again, the recent rule to close down bars… I still can’t comprehend the scenario. Why is Congress government hell bend on this rule? Are they myopic about their objective? Which era are they living?  What do they see for the future? Are they tackling drinking problem with these short sighted measures? Will it work? Are the public idiots?

oh…. I’m just rantling about it. Maybe, I’m more right winged fellas, with my ideals tilted towards free market and capitalism. Where business flourish and people have more options to live and earn in Kerala.

66 Crafty Business Ideas for Sunday Soul Sante

I’m a big fan of concepts like flea market, barter groups and second to none. If you’re in Bangalore, there’s one flea market which has no rivals – Sunday Soul Sante. When I first visited this community flea market at Palace Grounds, I was mesmerized by the spirit of business, especially the lady power.

Credit should go to the founders of this movement. I feel the same kind of concept should be taken to other cities like Trivandrum, Cochin, Hyderabad, Calcutta, etc.

The only complain I have about these events is the dearth of ideas. If you are a regular visitor to Sunday Soul Sante, then you’ll know it for real. Most the stalls are repetitive – T shirt design, Hand made jewellery, soups, organic stuffs, twisted glass bottles, colourful photo frames. There are only few new ideas in each event, rest it’s kind of repetitive or copied straight from Pinterest.

This got me thinking of adding new variations to the Soul Sante idea seekers. I thought of sharing what ever I come across on the Internet and some which comes to my jagged mind.

1) Designer Coat Hangers

Metal Coat Hanger

I saw this image while browsing for ideas to cut stress. This image got me thinking of some invention you can try for your next flea market stall. All it requires in cool designs made of different materials ( aluminium, steel, wood). Check out for more ideas on Pinterest.

2) Designer Umbrella

I think this idea is already done. But there’s more room for innovation. Why don’t you have one person who will do instant paint based on the customer’s choice. Or let the visitors see how an artist paints on the umbrella. All this and more adds to the curiosity factor of your stall.

3) Unique Shaped Soaps

In one of the Sunday Soul Sante held at Whitefield I went to a stall selling handmade soups. The soap designs kept in the store was very predictable stuff. Some where car design and similar boring stuffs. I asked the guy manning the store for crazy or naughty designs. The shop keeper probably misunderstood or didn’t understand the scenario.

4)

Mobile Application for Auto Drivers in India

Today I was on my way to meet a friend at Indira Nagar. One the way I passed a park near to Domlur BDA complex. It choose service road for its green cover, and peace. And like me there were other people who choose this quite side road. Few auto drivers had parked their auto and they were sleeping inside it.

Tired fellas – Probably they are taking a break from their hectic trips around the city. This got me thinking of an mobile app for auto guys. What do you say? Will they use such an application? Is it too early?

According to me, it can work as these guys are getting used to smart phones and many of them are used to OLA app.

So, what will this mobile app help them?

  1. Create bonding among auto drivers
  2. Share information about localities
  3. Provide a forum to share details of auto repair shops
  4. Raise funds or personal loan to overcome any emergency
  5. Start medical insurance scheme for auto drivers
  6. Share information about safe and peaceful localities where they can take rest during day or night
  7. Trade information on spare parts shop, upholstery shop, etc
  8. Sell or trade or exchange of spare parts, tires, etc
  9. Help auto drivers straddled in remote location due to repair or with an empty tank
  10. Give education fund for those willing to learn new vocational skills
