What’s wrong with these hotel websites

All these website are just copycats. There’s nothing to make it stand out.

I wonder if these hoteliers know the importance of online marketing or building their brand online. How are they differentiating themselves in the physical and online space? What is their selling point? Is it customer service or food or anything else?
Well, it wont be long before they see how competitors acquire more guest from online sources. I feel that hospitality sector needs reeducation and awareness program on online marketing?

Maid Of Honor – Ideas to Upgrade Life Skills

Q: Are you more happy, healthy, or knowledgeable than you were – say, last week, last month or last year?

At one time our CEO used to pack this punch during our weekly meeting. After hearing it often, I felt the need to share this concept with you.

When was the last time you did something for the first time …

  • What new did you learn during last weekend?
  • What are you bringing back to the table?
  • Are you just warming your ass on the office chair?
  • Are you just following orders, doing what’s being told?

When I see young boys and girls proudly sporting office tag, I reminds me of – Big yellow tags  clipped to cattle’s ears. I wonder if they are just like cattle working is some factory or are they innovators in their space.

On the same lines of BPO or IT employee, even house maids to some extend are just working based on orders. Sometimes I wonder how they can excel in life and EARN more!

How can Maids learn new Skills  & Earn More Money?
I stay in Domlur, Bangalore. It’s a thickly packed neighborhood where most BDA houses share common wall. It’s a typical middle class, where most of the residents have a car and park it on the road.

Also, these middle class residents have maids. And what do these maids do. Most of them take care of washing, cleaning and scrubbing. From morning 7: AM till 11ish, maids of all age group, shapes and color walk in and out of these houses. As a people watcher, I keep tab of maids, their physic, work, etc.

Describing four Maids In Our Locality – Domlur Village Maids

Maid # 1 – She must be in her early 20’s, dark in complexion, with over sized bosom. She uses water to clean her owners’ white Honda City Car. Also does some errands.

Maid # 2 – Matured, hot lady in her early 30’s, with dark and oily skin. She falls under the super horny type, meaty one. Call her red hot blackie. She sweeps the courtyard and washes vessels

Maid # 3  A middle aged lady, working at the adjacent house. Nothing peculiar about her, she always sports a worried look. Her task involves sweeping the floor, doing errands, and lavishly sports her midriffs.

Maid # 4 – And last our maid, Mrs Valli, a timid lady and mother of three. She does vessel cleaning and cleaning the floors.

Now, I have these question for you and for them:

  1. Do they ever job satisfaction? What motivates them – Is it no work!
  2. Will they ever get enough money to save for a retired life?
  3. What are their aspirations? How can they improve their income?
  4. Do they save money to any pension fund scheme !

Now, the most important question for you – Will you care to show a way or teach your maids a way to upgrade their skills.

Here I listed out options that came to my mind.

  1. Learn Cooking & Become a Part Time Cook
Upgrade skills by becoming a cook ( Part time or full time ( Learn different cuisines – North Indian, South Indian dishes or become a specialist in any particular cuisine ) Eg, fish curry specialist, chicken or biryani specialist. As a cook, you’ll double of what you earn as a maid. You can step into this domain by getting first into a job of cutting vegetables, mixing flour for chappati, etc.
  2. Take-up Beautician Course – Learn Beauty Treatment
Beautician job is ideal for young, attractive and people who have liking towards grooming. You ans take a short course on beauty treatment or learn pedicure and manicure. Or you can work in a ladies parlour to pick free lessons from there.
  3. Take Care of Elderly People or Lonely People in BangaloreGet trained in geriatric care and take care of aged people, parents or individuals living in any apartment. With aging population, there’s a rising demand for trustworthy people.
  4. Learn Massage & Become a masseur
Become a masseur – Give your memsahibs a feel good massage, starting with a leg massage. I think there are many lonely and bored housewife’s in Bangalore, who are reluctant to go out for a massage. Give that personal touch, and they will refer you to their friends and neighbours.
  5. Learn Gardening
Gardening skills is also a possibility. Learn to replant or add manure, or maintain a lawn or clean the weeds or arrange the pots. If you’ve green hands, then this one is for you. Also simultaneously start a small nursery and start selling plants. Visit a local nursery for more ideas or just start with a minimal investment.Even you can start collecting cow dung, dry it and set it in packets.
  6. New Born Care ( Washing babies & Post Delivery Care)
Can you good at taking care of newly born babies or do you take care of young mothers after their  delivery. All these skills can be learned by experience and it fetches more than doing housework.
Well, opportunities are endless, but most maids live and die as maids. What a waste of sheer talent, beauty or skills? This post is for you and me.

If you think it’s a practicable idea, then sponsor your maid for a higher studies. With this, you’re giving them an opportunity to excel, earn more and create more employment.

Will you be the mentor, guide or you just remain as a master?

Well, I told my maid about taking beauty course. At first she appeared interested, and went on to say that she is a fast learner. I got excited about this but when I asked about it after a week, then she said that her husband don’t like such jobs.

I wonder if she is telling the truth or is she was thinking that I had some other ulterior motive? I dropped the cause! So, who losses – Us!

Whatever, it is I keep telling people about such plans. I hope someone will work it out

Amen to them!

Fresh Resolution for 2013

During my 20’s and my 30’s I love to make resolution and break yearly resolution. And today on new year’s eve, I”m still contemplating on making resolution…

Let’s take away the word resolution, and think of something like me, in people around me…

  • Meeting more men and women ( widening my social circle)
  • Contribute something back to the society ( I like clean public toilet initiative)
  • Do public talk on content marketing
  • Share my knowledge on web with younger gen
And

today ( Nov 2013)…my resolutions are still on paper!

Why are Keralites Negatively happy?

I spend a big chunk of my life in Trivandrum. I was holed in this paradise thinking this is the only paradise. Only reading showed a window of outside world. Then I moved out of Kerala and settled in Bangalore. Now, I could see Kerala in a different lense. I knew only the rosy part of Kerala, like the:

  1. High literacy rate
  2. Low infant mortality rate
  3. Talented workforce
  4. Religious harmony ( moderate)
  5. Political maturity (so called)
All these stats and figures are positive of my state, but there are some shocking grey side to God’s Own Country. What are those points:
  • Aggravated socialistic mentality ( Depending and blaming everything on Govt or on America)
  • Steep gender divide ( Rigid social norms on man and women interaction)
  • High levels of negativity – Saying NO to every project – Any fool can say NO
  • Rising divorce rates ( Men not able to accept women’s new role)
  • Frequent bandh/hartal & high hand of union
  • Resentment towards business – Even small biz are looked as bourgeoisie
  • Rampant favoritism and  nepotism
  • High dowry – Regular social norm
  • Fetish for gold ( Connected with hefty dowry)
  • Rising number of gold pledge shops ( Residential borrowing shooting up)
So, the list goes on and one. But what I’m optimistic about the future of Kerala. I see two things that’s going to make a sea change in the life, habit and lifestyle of people.

1) News paper media will loose it’s sheen and subscriber base
2) Small business ventures, esp home based, freelancers will increase
3) Power with the bureaucracy or clerks will wane down
4) Digitization of paper work will reduce corruption
5) Traditional universities will die. Watch out!
(Many low quality Engineering and MBA colleges will shut down)
6) Online learning will take a higher role
7) Less importance on traditional schooling or higher studies
8) Social media use by citizens will pose a headache and threat to politicians, and bureaucrats

There are my thoughts. If you have similar thoughts or like to carry a conversation on these line, you’re welcome. BTW, visit my meetup in Bangalore post.

Christmas in Trivandrum

Yet another Christmas in Trivandrum and here’s what I felt during this somber Christmas

  • Priest at Vellayambalam Church read out his message from a note. His message was good, but he could have made it much better…
  • Cakes of different shapes and sizes lined up in all the bakeries, but it was just looking too ordinary ( Why can’t anyone make something remarkable, package it better, make it look more special
  • Meat shops were crowded ..nothing special. All packed with people, and surroundings were unclean
  • Forgot to send Christmas cards …Next time I should collect postal address
  • Didn’t receive any Christmas calls, neither I made any calls (Bad both ways)
  • Drove in my scooter through Kowdiar, koravankonam road late evening… enjoyed it…next year, would like to drive in a convertible
  • Back home by 11:00 PM…Too early to hit the bed…I want more night life

101 Things to do in Trivandrum – Attractions & Unusual

Are you a first time visitor to Trivandrum? Ever wonder what’s there to explore this capital city? Are you looking for a closer, more personal experience with the people in this city – knowing few of them or participate in an experience ?

Here are the list of few places to visit in Trivandrum and things you might try while you’re in this coastal city.

1) Stroll around Napier museum premises or just relax or read a book, take pictures, share it with your friends. Visit the natural history museum, or randomly start talking to people who you think will tell you more about the city. This place is closed on Monday.

2) Take rest in one of the museum benches or lie down on the green grass surrounding Napier Museum .

3) Visit the open zoo in Trivandrum.

4) Browse for old books at the used book store near to the Public library (Palayam). If you’re lucky, you’ll get hands on priceless treasures at a bargain price. I’ve made really good collection of National Geographic Magazine and Chase books from these shops.

5) Walk inside the Victorian styled Public Library in Trivandrum. Or go inside the reference section to browse books.

 6) Take one of the city buses during rush hour. Once you are inside the bus, guess what each one does for living. If you’re a good face reader, it will be a good time pass. 🙂

7) Explore the last frontier – Space. Priyadarshini Planetarium. Located at Post Master General (PMG) junction, there is one antiquated Science Museum close to this building. Mind you, I found it too boring.

8) Walk through the corridors of Public Office building ( opp to Museum). Peek inside one of the Govt offices to see bureaucracy in slow motion. See stacks of files in each desk, and clerks of sizes and shapes working, walking, and doing the ‘hard work’. Step inside their canteen to have a hot tea.

9) Write a letter to a long lost friend. Visit Public Office building and drop it in one of the letter box inside this building.

10) Take a walk around the beautiful winding road around Kanakakunnu palace. Best during morning or by evening.

11) Mill with the devotees visiting Hanuman temple, at PMG junction.

12) Walk around the majestic granite, seven storied Padanabha temple. This temple recently came on news for it’s golden treasures. Just visualize the treasures inside these granite blocks. What shapes and sizes lies inside this 15th temple. Also think without limits on how these treasures made its way inside this temple.

13) Go for a movie at Sree Kumar or at Sree Vishak. During my colledge years ( 87 – 88 ), I used to see  English movies. At that time, balcony ticket costed just Rs 6/-  Wonder Years

14) Hire an auto for three or four hours and go for a joy ride around Vellayambalam, Kowdiar, or anywhere around Trivandrum. Stop at coffee shops to share a hot steaming cup of tea, and trade stories with the auto driver

15) Explore night food joints in Trivandrum. Visit Buhari restaurant at East Fort to savor their unique mutton curry. You can choose to have mutton with Puttu, dosa or paratta. If you’re lucky, you can get Mutton bone dish (nelli) and there’s a curry with goat testicles.

16) Step inside or window shop at any of the gold shops inside East Fort. Ponder on why these folks buy gold. Is it for a fat dowry? Is it for savings? Or is it b’cos of surplus funds? I vouch for the first one..

17) Mill around the budget shoppers inside Chalai market. Visit chalai vegetable market to see how traders sell vegetables in small lots. Further walk and few turns will lead to a lane where you can buy mud pots.

18) Are you a second hand hunter? They Marakada road near Chalia has couple of shops selling old and vintage stuffs. From used phones to antique keys or to handcuffs …if you’re lucky

19) Interested in history or the life of Travancore prince and princesses? On place to get high quality prints of our old maharaja is from Maharaja Studio, run by Mr Rajan. He is the official photographer of  Kowdiar royal family.  Probably, they can help you to Kowdiar palace. Call them at 0471 243 3233 for more details.

20) Cool off the heat from your body…enjoy a good swim at Public Swimming pool Vellayabalam or the try the swimming pool at Mascot hotel in Trivandrum.

21)

Cafe Sarwaa

Sarwaa

Visit Sarwaa, a trendy lifestyle store located at Shathamangalam – curios items, home art, terracotta jewelry, lingerie, organic products, cut pieces of jewelry, etc. Also, relax time in their cafe.

22) While you are in Trivadrum, visit one of the many coffee houses dotting the city. While, the old charm of coffee house is lost with modernity, there many old timers like me who are regular visitors. Probably you can order strong coffee, sit for long hours, read the faces of people who walk in or look around the old posters hanging on the walls.

23) Get an escort/guide to take you around Trivandrum. One of my friend, one Mr Ramesh works as an recognized guide/escort. He speaks good English, and can give a good perspective about the city, the life, etc. He can be contacted by phone:

24)

Kerala’s Martial Arts Form – kalarippayat

31) Visit Thumba rocket launching station. Get in touch with the public relation office to know the places you can visit and get a brief about the activities of this place.

32) Ambassador cars are rare now in Trivandrum, but you can still hire one. Why don’t you hire an ambassador car for a day and explore the nook and corner of this city. It’s a different experience to ride in the sofa seated cars.

33) Contact someone who can arrange a vegetarian meals from one of the Brahmin’s house in Eastfort. While you’re there, you might be interested to see their peculiar house construction, and learn about their community.

34) Pattor has a catholic cemetery. For those who like to see and read the epitahs on old graves, there’re few old tomb stones.

If you’re an offbeat traveler, with interest to get up-close and personal with the people of this town, then here’s an opportunity. You can meet for a coffee or dine with some level headed people living in this town.

Probably you can dine with the person from the royal family or with a graphic designer, or teacher, an architect, or a rock musician or a classical signer, dancer, modern painter, government cler, photographer, professional gardener, or a zoo keeper, a software programmer, Ayurveda masseur, or a person who has similar interest, then it’s possible.

Or, it’s even possible to dine with a family in Trivandrum. There will be some cost, but you a chance to visit their house, chit-chat with them, and then dine with them. Something which Mealtango.in arranges in other cities in India.

Again, I would recommend you to get in touch with a guide who can show you around.  He might be able to arrange a dinner with a person from a background you are interested.
