Koshy’s Bangalore 2020 Visit

Quick meet with Suja at Koshy’s. It’s been a long time since I had a beer from this place. And for the first time shook hands with Prem Koshy. Thanks to Suja, who sparked a short conversation with him and following which he came to the table to see why she was still sitting with her biryani.

Koshy’s – What it means to you and them?

What are your moments and memories in this restaurant?
What do you order or drink the most from Koshy’s?
How to meet regulars who come to Koshy’s?

Koshy’s Restaurant – Roll Back on Time

Tea at Koshy’s

Beer or Tea ( At Koshy’s)

I’m regular at Koshy’s restaurant. Well, not so regular, but sticks to the routine of stopping here for tea after the Sunday mass at St Patrick’s Church.

First Experience at Koshy’s
As a small time fella from a small-town, I had a cultural shock and awe when I first visited this iconic restaurant in Bangalore. It was a time when smoking inside the restaurant was the norm. I still remember the sight of a lady in blue silk sari, who casually smoked a cigarette. I kept on looking at her, between my drink on how she let out the smoke in a gush in a casual, confident style. A poise filled with confidence, something alien to me. Well, that was around 2005.

So, what has changed in me from that moment till now?

Did I get savvy as the people who comes to Koshy’s?
Did I grow along with this city?

Not much – I’m still wading around in this city, like many others – living that automated, unknown existence.

New Topic
Just wondering on this point – Imagine this scenario – I liked a restaurant’s menu and, which I like to replicate? How do I go about it? Is there a simple, a short cut way to learn how to replicate the menu or an organization or a culinary institute which can decode the recipe and give it.

Just posting!

What’s the Idea?
Well, what more can an old-time restaurant dish out? How well can it narrate the stories? How do they tell? Do they really care to share the story of their beginning to new patrons?

Coffee & Mutton omelette at Koshy’s

It’s a routine for us to visit Koshy’s after Sunday’s evening mass at St Patrick church’s. In a typical visit, we would have coffee, sometimes we end up having bread toast or sandwich. But, today for a chance we had mutton omelette. A bill which should have been inside Rs 40 swelled to Rs 180.

So, how did the price shoot up? It’s the value addition and packing. And, this takes me to another question: What value are you adding to (your offering/others)?

Koshy’s Restaurant – Street View
What makes Koshy’s restaurant so special?
  • Is it the ambiance?
  • Is it the history behind it?
  • Is it the food? Appam or beef?
  • Is it the laid back attitude?
  • Is it the sugar bowl?
  • Is it the checkered table cloth?
  • Is it the kind of crowd it attracts?
  • Is it the location?
First exposure to Koshy’s joint
My first visit to Koshy’s restaurant chanced upon me, the first glimpse of the hep crowd from Bangalore. At that time, smoking was allowed, and I looked at awe, on the sight of ladies who smoked with manly confidence.

Sights like these were new to my life, and I wanted to know more. As my life progressed in Bangalore, I soon got acquainted with a lady. Our initial rendezvous was all in Koshy’s over a glass of rum and fish.

Life moved forward, we spend less time in Koshy’s and started visiting many new age pubs and cafe joints. Each place comes with a story, but I feel none as old and peculiar as Koshy’s.
So, much has come and gone for this iconic restaurant. Started in the 40’s, Koshy’s has come a long way. People from the Emperors and to small time crooks(like me) has come to dine.
Koshy’s on the move

What’s the future for Koshy’s. Will it move bodily in the test of time, or will it still cling to the old tales that still hang on its walls.

I hope it moves with the change, at the same time retains the laid back warmth to all the patrons under its roof.

If you’re reading this post and looking for a coffee partner at Koshy, then don’t hesitate. During weekends, I’ll free to join for a coffee & chit-chat.
